This online module is a 15 credit module which makes up part of the QQI Level 5 Major Award in Early Childhood Care & Education.
The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence relevant to the theory and practice of child development and learning within early childhood care and education settings (ECCE).
Who Should Complete This Module:
Early childhood care and education staff, supervisors or managers.
People who wish to gain an accredited qualification in child development and wish to study at their own pace, and in their own time.
On successful completion of this module, learners will able to:
1 Explain the holistic development of the child. This includes, physical, cognitive, language, social, emotional, moral, spiritual, creative and cultural development
2 Describe a range of theories of child development and learning, which include Piaget, Chomsky, Erikson, Bowlby, Ainsworth, Pavlov and Skinner
3 Describe the influence of family, social, cultural and environmental factors on development and learning
4 Identify the benefits of play to the child’s holistic development and learning mindful of diversity, inclusion and equality of opportunity
5 Describe the contribution of the practitioner/parent/guardian to the development and learning of children in the home and in the ECCE setting
6 Apply theoretical principles of child development in the ECCE setting
7 Document children’s developmental progress against normative milestones of development
8 Carry out observations in support of programme planning for individual children and groups
9 Recommend suitable play activities to promote holistic development and learning
10 Evaluate own role and practice in supporting the development and learning of the child.

Following completion of this module, you will be awarded a QQI Level 5 component certificate in Child Development (5N1764).
