Learners who complete this course will obtain knowledge and understanding relating to the care of people with life-limiting conditions.

Palliative care is an approach to care focusing on promoting comfort through relieving pain and other symptoms. The aim of palliative care is to enhance the quality of life of those living with life-limiting progressive conditions and their families.

This course can enhance skills and employment opportunities for those working in the area of care support. Other learners who choose to do this course may include those who are close to a person receiving palliative care.

On completion of this course, learners will be issued with a QQI Level 5 Component Certificate in Palliative Care. This course is worth 15 credits and can also be used as credit value towards a variety of QQI Major Awards.

Programme Profile and Timeframe:

This programme module endeavours to provide the learner with the knowledge, skills and competence to enable them to care for and address the needs of a person and their family after the diagnosis of a life-limiting illness, in a dignified, inclusive and holistic manner.

This course is run over either 8 evenings, one evening per week, or four days. It is a blended learning programme and learners will complete reading and assignment work at home, between classes.

Entry Requirements:

Fluent English is required and it is recommended that participants will have some relevant work or life experience in a relevant sector.

Work Experience:

Work experience is not a mandatory requirement to pass this programme.

Course Materials:

Currently, learners are emailed the handouts required weekly. Please note that while you may like to print out your handouts, laptops and tablets are welcome in class. We are currently working on an online platform for course materials and hope learners will be able to avail of this in 2019.


All tutors on this programme are qualified in their specific fields to a minimum level of two above that of which they are teaching. Our tutors also have practical experience in their individual fields along with experience and qualifications in adult training and development.

Tutoring Methodologies

A variety of methods and approaches are used including: practical demonstrations, oral presentations / interviews, individual tutorial support, assignments and projects, work experience, discussions and debates, role play and attendance by specialist guest speakers.


The cost of this module is €250.00

Payment is made in two installments as follows:

Payment 1: €100.00 Booking deposit, this is payable when booking to secure your place

Payment 2: €150.00 payable before your first class

Please note that deposits are non-refundable, unless the course is changed or cancelled by ourselves. Refund of fees is not payable to learners who do not complete the course or assessments.


If you are in receipt of a payment from the Department of Social Protection, on a CE Scheme or participating in activation schemes, you may be eligible for some funding. Please contact the office for further advice in relation to this.
